False friends are French words that look like English words but have very different meanings — and they often cause confusion for learners.

Here are a few examples:
- Supporter in French means to put up with, not to support or to help.
- Rester means to stay, not to rest.
- Surveiller means to watch or to keep an eye on, not to survey or to examine.
- Assister means to attend, not to assist.
- Un car means a coach or bus. (In French, une voiture is a car.)
- Éventuellement means possibly or potentially.
- Finalement or pour finir means eventually in English.
