Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, situated right on the river Vézère, between Montignac and Les Eyzies de Tayac, is classed as one of the most beautiful villages in France (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France) and it’s easy to see why.

A Sunday morning walk around the village as it is waking up is delightful. The village is made up of quaint old buildings constructed out of golden stone which are set along pretty narrow alleys. It boasts a Roman church with Lauze roof and a 14th century château, Château de La Salle, with its square Donjon. On the river side of the village is the beautiful, sixteenth century Château de Clérans.
The village has plenty of restaurants and a handful of craft shops. There is small campsite and camping car park. Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère is a start/drop off point for canoe hire. In July and August, the village hosts an evening market (marché gourmand, you need to bring your own plates, cutlery etc).

If you would like to read about canoeing down the river from this pretty little village, take a look at my book, My Dordogne Life, available on Amazon.
